A GNOME overview in Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS
GEdit
Without tabs, each file will be opened in an independent window.
Totem
One image could be better than thousands of words
Notice that 'Movie' replaced with 'File', and the 'Sidebar' bottom became just an icon.
Also I hope that all codecs will be available next versions.
By the way, the same design is reomended for Media Player Classic:

Fonts
One of the differences between Windows and Linux is using of a feature called "Smooth Edges" in Windows, and "Best shapes" or "Subpixel Smoothing" in Linux. it makes font consists of black and gray pixels, not only black pixels.
This feature is used in Linux everywhere; GUI items, web pages, and office documents... etc. But in Windows it excepts GUI items, since the font used in GUI items is natively designed for GUI items only, it consists of only black pixels, there's no gray pixels at all.
Linux is strongly recommended to follow this principle:
> "GUI font
should consist of black pixels only".
Nautilus
There are five applications could be merged with Nautilus:
Sound Recorder
As a bottom in Nautilus toolbar. The default path where file will be saved in is the current location of Nautilus.
XSane Image Scanner
As a bottom in Nautilus toolbar. The default path where file will be saved in is the current location of Nautilus.
Totem/Eye of GNOME:
Pressing 'Enter' on the opened file by Totem/EyeOfGnome should close its window and open Nautilus at this file, just like ACDSee.:
Audio CD Extractor:
I suggest a bottom on toolbar called 'Convert'. Pressing this bottom should lead user to a wizard consists of the following steps:
-
Selecting the destination format
-
Adjust format settings
-
Selecting the destination path (by default it's the current path)
This idea will save a lot time and efforts for developing an independent application for each converting job!

Ubuntu, The Closer Distribution to Perfection
... And that's why there are only four suggestions to improve it, while GNOME will be another independent issue in another independent post.
-
An ability to boot to command line by:
- Either pressing 'Esc' during the boot progress (recommended)
- Or adding a "Command Line" option in the boot menu
- Or both.
With a screen like this:
Just like Slax
- This means that mc (Midnight Commander) should be available
-
And there should by a way to import/export user profiles, to/from a
GZip file, includes:
- Documents
- Email Data
- Favorite Bookmarks
- htdocs (Apache files)
- Desktop
- Application Configurations
- Templates
- RSS Feeds
- Atom Feeds
- Web history
- Cookies
- Recent Documents (links)
These should be stored together in a one folder.
-
The last suggestion is to use GPerfection themes. Take a look:

Giga thanx 2 Slax!
Here' a brief wish list, for this tiny state of art:
- UTF-8 file system support: one of the must important thing.
-
Here's my
favorite text-mode screen, you can replace
/etc/issuefile with it. -
This means:
- There should be a guest account , as you see, just like the old versions.
- using gui alias, just like the old versions too.
-
Autorun.inf:
[Autorun] open=explorer.exe /n,/e,\
- Desktop-log-off options: to shell/switch user/halt/reboot
-
ls -las a default command instead ofls, and page by page, directories first.
Installation:
- An installation program supports Integration with windows.
- Auto Ejecting CD should be disabled when Slax is installed on the hard disk.
- An ability to install lzm files (modules) from the hard-disk-installed Slax, by converting the lzm files to gz.
KDE:
- QTParted for hard disk installation.
- Kaffeine (or KPlayer) as the default media player, & KDE based XMMS, sort of integration between Juk and XMMS.
- No KsCD
- Quanta Plus (as a part of koffice applications).
- Games: KStrike & Knights (Chess)
GNOME
Yes, I think that there should be a GNOME based Slax, with GPerfection themes (shot1, shot2, shot3), it could be the utopia itself.
Again...giga thanx to Slax!
